The Hunger Games

BOOK vs. MOVIE

by Maya Cherins

Killing, starving, love, death, hatred, fighting... Yep. Thats The Hunger Games for you. The Hunger Games was written by Suzanne Collins. This novel is probably what most teens talk about in this moment in time. The novel was published in September, 2008 and on March 23, 2012 The Hunger Games was released in theatres as a movie. The movie was 2 hours and 22 minutes long and even though that is a long movie, many things had to be changed or taken out, so the question is, “What is the difference?”

One of the first things that I noticed to be different was that in the book, Katniss Everdeen (played by Jennifer Lawrence in the movie) narrates the whole story so you only read about what happens to her. But in the movie, you could see Seneca Crane (played by Wes Bentley in the movie) and the games makers plan out the games while Katniss is in the arena. While it was different, I really enjoyed it.

Something else I noticed is that Katniss receives the mockingjay from Madge, the District 12’s mayor’s daughter in the book. Except in the movie Katniss gets it for free at The Hub, a trade market in District 12. This disappointed me because later on in the trilogy the history of the mockingjay is an important factor.

Another thing that I noticed was different was that in the book, Katniss describes how the mutts had the different eyes of people she loved. AKA, Prim, her, her mom, and Gale. And in the movie, you didn’t see the eyes of the people she loved. They were just regular mutts. While I think it would be cool if they had the features of the people Katniss loved, I didn’t mind that much.

Lastly, I noticed that in the end of the movie, Seneca Crane, the game maker was locked in a room with poisonous grapes so you know as the viewer that he dies. In the book, you are told that he is hanged. This didn’t annoy me that much, because it would most likely affect the rating of the movie.

I hope that you can all go and see the movie if you haven’t seen it yet and for those who haven’t read the book, I suggest that you do. As a student, and a reader, I enjoyed the book more than I have enjoyed a book in a very long time.
